Careers used to be more linear. Choose a path, work hard, move up, retire.
No way. That is not only less likely to be the reality now, but we also have far more choices than previous generations did. The catch is that we have to do the work to create those choices for ourselves. They rarely just fall into our lap.
Our careers evolve because we evolve. What mattered to me at 30 does not matter in the same way it does today. Roles that once felt exciting eventually started to feel constraining. And the definition of success that got many of us here may not be the one that takes us forward.
So this weekend, instead of asking yourself What should I do next?, try these three questions:
1. What part of my current career still fits me really well — and what part have I quietly outgrown?
2. If I stopped assuming that “progress” means moving up, what other options might I consider?
3. What does success need to look like now for my career and my life to work well together?
Your past choices were not wasted. They got you here. But you are allowed to decide that what comes next needs a different definition of success.
Start choosing your path more intentionally.
