It’s mid-winter in Australia. The mornings are darker. It’s harder to get out of bed. We bunker in a little more, reach for warmer layers, cook slower meals, crave more rest, and care for ourselves differently.
And I’ve been thinking - what better time to create some space to care for our careers differently too?
One of my biggest career learnings is that really great opportunities don’t just happen. They come through deliberate reflection, discovery, design and connection.
Yes, sometimes there is luck. Sometimes the right door opens at the right time. Sometimes someone sees something in you and gives you a chance.
But more often than not, the opportunities that truly align with who you are, what you value, how you want to lead, and the life you want to create - they don’t arrive by accident.
They are shaped by your willingness to stop and pay attention.
Most people don’t consciously stop to examine their lives or careers until something starts to feel uncomfortable, wrong, or out of sync with what matters to them.
Sometimes that discomfort is loud. Burnout. Exhaustion. Resentment. A health wake-up call. A relationship strain. A role that has become completely unsustainable.
But often, it’s quieter than that. You’re still functioning. Still performing. Still leading the team. Still delivering results. Still showing up. And from the outside, everything looks fine. But underneath, there’s a lingering sense that something no longer fits the way it once did.
You can’t always name it yet, but you can feel it.
Maybe the work that once stretched you now drains you.
Maybe your success has outpaced your satisfaction.
Maybe your role looks impressive, but your energy tells a different story.
Maybe you’re doing what you’re good at, but not what feels meaningful anymore.
Maybe you’ve built a career that works on paper, but doesn’t quite work in your life.
That’s information, not failure. And the invitation is not to ignore it until it becomes a crisis. The invitation is to get curious.
To ask: what is this discomfort trying to tell me?
What am I outgrowing?
What am I craving more of?
What am I tolerating that I no longer want to carry into the next season?
This is the real work of career leadership.
It’s not waiting until you’re stuck, exhausted, or desperate for a change. It’s building the discipline of checking in before the wheels fall off.
Reflection helps you see the patterns.
Discovery helps you understand what matters now.
Design helps you make conscious choices.
Connection helps you open doors, test possibilities, and build momentum.
So, if winter is asking you to slow down a little, maybe don’t rush past it. Use it. And create space to care for your career differently.
Your next great opportunity may begin with the courage to listen.
