May is my birthday month, and I still get as excited as a 5-year-old!There is something about our birthday time that generally makes reflection feel a little more natural. Unless it’s a milestone birthday, this is more in a pause-for-a-minute-and-take-stock kind of reflection. Where did I expect I would be (at this point in my life)? How do I feel about where I am? What matters to me now? What do I want my next year to look like? I think birthdays give us permission to notice. And in leadership, noticing is underrated. Most leaders I know are moving fast. There is always something to solve, someone to support, a conversation to have, a decision to make, an issue to manage, a target to hit. The pace is relentless. Which means reflection often gets pushed aside in favour of action. I can feel that the most in a coaching session when reflection is limited to the most recent problem to solve or current load being carried. Some of the best leadership shifts come from a moment where you stop long enough to reflect and be honest with yourself. I have outgrown that. That is draining more energy than it should. I am better at this than I give myself credit for. I need to be braver here. This reflection helps us lead with more intention instead of just reaction. I think this is especially important for leaders because the more responsibility you carry, the easier it is to stay focused on everyone else. Their needs, performance, wellbeing. Their development and priorities. So maybe birthday reflection is not really about getting older. Maybe it is about getting clearer. Clearer on what I want more of. Clearer on what needs to change. I think we often assume growth has to be big to count. But sometimes growth looks like smaller, quieter things. And with growth as one of my highest values I am so often seeking it out. So, as I move into my birthday month, that is what I am leaning into. Not pressure. Not reinvention. Just reflection. Maybe that is something worth borrowing, whether it is your birthday month or not. Because leadership has a way of pulling us forward at speed. Reflection helps us catch up with ourselves. Leadership gets better when you stop long enough to remember who you are, what matters most, and how you want to show up next. #realleadership #birthdaymonth #reflection #leadershipdevelopment #growth |
