Leadership isn’t just about one person’s impact, it’s about the ripple created when a whole team chooses to lead from a place of authenticity. And when that happens? The results go far beyond metrics.
I had the opportunity to work with a leadership team that was experiencing high turnover and lagging engagement. On paper, their strategy was sound. Their capability was strong. But beneath the surface, people didn’t feel connected - to the leaders, the purpose, or each other.The turning point came when the executive team recognised that the missing ingredient wasn’t another plan - it was trust. And trust doesn’t come from glossy values on a poster. It comes from leaders showing up as human beings.
We started with small things and it wasn’t easy. The team began every weekly meeting with a “real check-in” - not project updates, but human ones. What’s taking up space for you this week? What do you need support with? Slowly, layers peeled back. Leaders shared stories of challenges, self-doubt, and what shaped their leadership. They started inviting - and genuinely listening to - feedback from their teams.
They introduced a monthly story-share: one leader a month sharing a personal story about a time they failed, learned, or changed their approach. These weren’t scripted. They were raw, honest, and powerful. The effect was immediate. Others across the business began mirroring the same openness.
The culture shifted. People no longer felt like they had to have it all together to be valued. Leaders weren’t seen as distant or untouchable, but relatable. Managers felt empowered to lead with more transparency. Difficult conversations became easier. Innovation picked up speed because people felt safe to challenge and try new things.
One of the most powerful moments came during a town hall when a team member said, “It feels like we’re finally allowed to be real here.”
That’s the multiplier effect. When Real Leadership starts at the top, it doesn’t stop there. It spreads. It strengthens relationships. It accelerates trust. It lifts performance, not through pressure, but through connection.
Leadership isn’t just personal - it’s exponential. And when every leader on a team commits to leading from who they are, it doesn’t just transform their impact. It transforms the entire organisation.
