One of the hardest truths I’ve learnt and seen in leadership is that good intention does not guarantee positive impact.
You might believe you are being honest, strong, decisive, or authentic. But if people are shutting down, holding back, or protecting themselves around you, it is worth asking a harder question:
What assumptions am I making about what good leadership looks like?
Sometimes the very behaviours we’ve learned to value in ourselves are the ones limiting our influence, connection, and impact.
Leadership growth starts when we stop defending our style and start examining it.
3 questions for reflection:
- What leadership behaviour do I justify because “that’s just how I am”?
- What assumptions am I making about strength, honesty, authority, or respect?
- How might my impact improve if I paired my natural style with more intention and self-awareness?
That’s where the real work is.
And that’s where better leadership begins.
