How’s the prep going?
You are clear on your intent, have a plan, you have blocked time to start practicing some things. Now let’s face it, impact is about others. Have you thought about how you’re going to involve them?
Like the question, if a tree falls in a forest but there’s no one to hear it, does it make a sound? We all know scientifically it does, but that’s not the point. Leadership Impact is about the ripple effect and if you’re doing this work and preparation in isolation the ripple will be limited. We’re not interested in limiting impact, we want to develop and optimise impact. So, bottom line, you must include others. Your leadership impact is meant to spill, to have that spreading ripple effect, pervasive, with intentional influence.
Leadership impact in a bubble is pointless so burst it.
We’ve already introduced the notion of others in reflecting about the potential friction of the work, change or improvement you want to carry out. Now let’s think how they can actually be part of the equation in a way that optimises the ripple. How your team also exercises leadership in an aligned way to maximise the leadership, cultural and performance impact. How your people in turn continue to amplify your impact.
Planning your impact with your team, in your organisation, as part of the culture heightens its power. Remember it’s all about creating leadership habits and promoting behaviour that will have the desired outcomes. In having others also role model that behaviour, you are making it more obvious, accessible, attractive because we are creatures of habit that want to belong and want to be, do, act as a tribe.
One of the best strategies to establish new behaviours and thinking that can optimise impact, is to do it collectively. Commit together and hold each other to account. Develop a shared language where you can give and receive feedback about your impact.
Plan to have an impact workshop with your people where you establish your why, get clear on your intent and learn to maximise your leadership potential as a team.
